Monico Alloys, Inc. processes scrap alloy for reuse at their plant in Rancho Dominauez. CA. The plant uses large amounts of water for the clean up’ of scrap pieces, as well as for cleaning grinding, deburring and cutting equipment. The wastewater contains variable amounts of emulsified oil, metal fines and cleaning chemistry from the metal finishing process.

The Challenge

Discharge regulations for the city of Rancho Dominguez made if financially unfeasible for Monico to dispose of the wash water directly to drain due to the large volume of oil and metal fines in the waste stream. Monico evaluated several technologies, including clay precipitation systems, but determined that they were not effective for the removal of oil from their variable composition waste stream.

The Solution

SpinTek Filtration performed an extended pilot study at Monico's plant and was able to demonstrate that tubular ultra filtration could provide a consistent filtrate (permeate) from a variable composition feed source. Regardless of the amount of emulsified oils or metal fines in the feed, the tubular ultra filtration system produced a dischargeable (or reusable) stream without increased operator intervention or chemical addition.
